2004年08月,原铁道部展开为用于中国铁路第六次大提速、时速200公里级别的第一轮高速动车组技术引进招标,阿尔斯通是中标厂商之一,获得了60组高速列车的订单。2004年10月10日,铁道部和阿尔斯通正式签订总值6.2亿欧元的合同,根据合同,阿尔斯通将7项高速列车的关键技术转移给中国,并有3组列车会在阿尔斯通位于意大利的工厂组装,并完整付运予中国;另有6组以散件形式付运,由中方负责组装;其余51组通过法国的技术转移,由长客在国内生产。CRH5系列累计生产213组,该系列全部列车均为耐高寒抗风沙设计,几乎能够在全国除青藏高原外所有地区运营。
