CRH3A是中车唐山和长客在吸收CRH5A与CRH3C系列的技术之后研发的一款时速200-250km/h城际动车组平台，CRH3A样车曾一度命名为CJ1，旨在体现其具备城际属性。量产版的CRH3A与中国标准动车组同步研制，结合了CR400BF系列的优点，是一款能够满足长距离运行的干线列车；同系列中的CRH3A-A则是基于CR300BF的完全作为城际/市域用途的动车组列车。本系列累计生产74组，折合68标准组
