新一代CRH2系列曾计划用于更新CRH2车型的外观及内饰,采用全新的外观设计,内饰参照CRH380A系列进行优化。由于既有CRH2系列的配件供应稳定且成本较低,且中国标准动车组的立项,该车型未大规模量产。2015年11月10日,中国铁路总公司招标17组卧铺动车组列车,其中四方中标其中12组,但仅生产前5列,之后7列按旧款头型CRH2B交付,使得本系列最终仅生产35组,折合40标准组。
