中国标准动车组2013年起开始研发，自首款列车2015年问世至今，历经多年发展，已形成完成的产品体系。随着技术的不断发展，自动驾驶技术逐渐成熟，具备投入商业运行的条件，同时为了在2022年北京-张家口冬奥会中展现中国高铁风采，搭载更先进控制平台和全新外观设计的CR400BF智能动车组诞生。新型列车优化了气动外形，能够实现更低风阻，降低噪音和能耗。提供更优的客舱服务水平，有效提升舒适度。
除了对乘客界面进行优化之外，智能动车组对列车对网络、转向架、车载安全监测等系统进行了智能化升级，具备智能故障诊断及智能运维功能，无需人工检修，自动记录故障类型、位置与出现时间及图片、视频，结合传感器数据及图像数据，通过AI主动判断故障位置、类型并给出合理对策，同时还进一步优化车地协同，使列车在安全性和舒适性上都有进一步的提升。将烟火报警与弓网监控整合进列车网络，将全车所有故障预警进行整合，均接入列车网络中，当故障出现时，系统直接直接给出相应的检查单，所有的故障会直接给出错误码并附带相应的处理方法。同时，全新的列车网络使弓网监控延迟不大于10ms，相较既有CRH以及普通复兴号有大幅度提升，还支持全车视频监控与快速回放，大幅提升列车运维智能化程度，有助于减少未能及时发现和处理故障带来的安全隐患。通过一系列的智能化的安全措施，列车维护保养周期大幅增加，部分线路条件较好的交路能够实现16000km/192h人工一级修里程，降低维保成本，也极大提升列车的出勤率。作为中国标准动车组的新成员，CR400BF智能系列动车组不仅支持不同型号、不同厂家生产的列车重联，还可以实现任意方向重联（CRH动车组大部分仅支持00车与01车重联），甚至还支持短编组与长编组重联及四组短编组重联运行和救援，可实现相互控制，亦可于普通CR400系列重联运行。更加适合中国铁路实际情况的理念，加上大量免维护和易维护的设计和自动化检修手段，极大便利的检修维护，延长检修周期，线路条件较好的交路能够实现人工一级修里程16000km/192h。
本系列自2018年12月采用新头型和瑞雪迎春、龙凤呈祥新涂装的模型车首次亮相至今，历经不断试验与改进，已经成为中国高速动车组颜值担当和扛鼎之作。CR400BF智能动车组平台涵盖8、16、17辆编组、工作温度-50~50℃等多款车型，在北京东奥、杭州亚运中成为重要的“中国名片”，同时，还衍生出新一代高速综合检测列车，并在下一代CR450动车组的研制中起到至关重要的作用。
