CRH6A-A是我国首款4辆编组的时速200 km/h的城际动车组,标志着我国城际动车组已形成谱系化,4辆编组能够有效降低采购成本,使更多城市迈入市域铁路时代。CRH6A-A基于CRH6F的主辅一体牵引系统和TCN列车网络,4辆编组的CRH6F-A是CRH6F的“短编版”,而CRH6A-A则是CRH6F-A的提速版,CRH6A-A从技术上讲与CRH6A关系不大

2017年09月09日,首列4辆编组的CRH6A-A完成厂内的动态调试,在中车青岛四方机车车辆股份有限公司下线。

2018年01月18日,CRH6A-A-0002到达沈阳北站,即将在沈丹、哈大等线路进行动力学试验。

2018年,成都都市圈城际铁路(成灌线、成蒲线)采购10组CRH6A-A动车组,用于加密车次,实现公交化运营。

2018年12月29日,CRH6A-A在成灌线载客始运营,列车命名为“天府号”

2019年1月05日,首批CRH6A-A在成雅线正式投入运营(0451-0460)。

2020年09月29日,由成都、绵阳、德阳、乐山、眉山、雅安等成都城市群内城市联合购置(租赁)的共计11组CRH6A-A型动车组上线运行,这些列车用于成德绵、成眉乐、成灌(彭)、成雅等铁路公交化加密开行(0480-0490,其中0480为原样车0002)。

2021年后制造的CRH6A-A采用了全新设计,更智能更舒适更经济(见CRH6A-A智能版)
