2009年06月,原铁道部招标采购时速350公里级别高速动车组,青岛四方庞巴迪铁路运输设备有限公司(BST)成为中标厂商之一,获得了20列8节编组和60列16节长编组座车的订单,但后续因为各种原因,长编组取消,订单变为70组短编组。CRH380D系列自2013年开始至2015年停产,累计生产85组。CRH380D是CRH380系列中问世最晚的车型,也是技术最先进的车型。不过CRH380D由于数量较少,且没有进行技术转移,运用成本较高。
